The Power of Music, Writing, and Education for a Calm Life

The pursuit of a calm life has become more than just a trend and in my life, I consider it a basic necessity. Perhaps, it is with age that I have come to value personal space, moments of silence, and less agitation. Whether through music, writing, or education, cultivating a calm lifestyle can profoundly impact mental and physical health.

But what does it mean to truly be calm?

Ever since 2021 when I began publishing about The Calm Principles in preparation of the book and album, I began to realize that a lot of people in wellness discussions view avoidance as an equivalent for a calm life standard. For some, it’s about finding peace in the chaos, while for others, it’s about creating spaces where tranquility can flourish. I subscribe more to the former as it allows for the reality of life to exist and, more importantly, coexist with my efforts to become calm. No matter the interpretation, the benefits of calmness are universal, fostering a deeper connection with ourselves and others.

The Science Behind Calm Living

Recent studies have highlighted the significant benefits of calm living on mental and physical health. I’d like to say that after 2020, the pandemic sort of provided a global spotlight for many aspects of the human wellness narrative that still need work. I’m always trying to learn more and read more about the latest trends in wellness, but I also try to stay away from fads and sit with the uncomfortable journey of calm living as a human being with many emotions and obligations.

A 2023 study published in Frontiers in Psychology found that individuals who regularly engage in calming activities, such as mindfulness and meditation, experienced a 30% reduction in anxiety and stress levels. Another 2022 study in the Journal of Behavioral Medicine revealed that calm living practices led to improved cardiovascular health, with participants showing lower blood pressure and heart rate variability. Finally, research from The American Journal of Lifestyle Medicine in 2022 demonstrated that integrating calm practices into daily routines can enhance overall well-being, leading to increased life satisfaction and resilience.

Music as a Tool for Calmness

Music is a powerful tool for achieving a state of calm. It transcends barriers, reaching deep into our psyche to soothe, heal, and inspire. The Calm PRINciples sound healing album by Prin is an example of how music can be used to cultivate a calm environment. This album, created with the intention of promoting relaxation and inner peace, incorporates healing frequencies and gentle melodies that resonate with the body and mind. I wrote the entire album during the month following my brother’s sudden death. I had completely different plans for the album that would accompany the book, but it seems life had a different plan for me and I was able to share sound healing in the way that I literally used it as part of my grieving process. By listening to calming music regularly, we can lower cortisol levels, reduce stress, and enhance our mood, making it easier to navigate the demands of everyday life.

Writing for Inner Peace

Writing is another profound method for achieving calmness. Journaling, in particular, allows us to express our thoughts and emotions, providing clarity and relief from mental clutter. The C.A.L.M. Principles book offers guidance on how to use writing as a tool for self-discovery and emotional balance. I fancy it being interactive and a great rabbit hole finder for readers who may not know where to start. A calm life takes some work, and I wrote the book after several years of drafting other versions for what calm living should be. Through its emphasis on Communication, Authenticity, Love, and Being Myself, the book encourages readers to explore their inner world, fostering a deeper sense of calm and contentment. Writing helps us process experiences, release negative emotions, and create a mental space where peace can thrive.

For some people, writing is a task. I get that. I work as a freelance writer, and it is my main source of income, along with my music and teaching. It’s always interesting to me how stressful writing can be for many people, and yet, it can also be cathartic and healing. We’re all different with what calms us.

Education as a Pathway to Calm

Education, in its broadest sense, empowers us to understand and manage our emotions, leading to a more balanced and calm life. By learning about mindfulness, stress management, and self-care techniques, we equip ourselves with the tools needed to navigate life’s challenges with grace. Yoga, meditation, breathing exercises, and spiritual routines are educational practices that teach us how to cultivate calmness from within. These practices help us connect with our bodies and minds, promoting relaxation, focus, and a sense of inner peace.

As a teacher for almost 25 years now, I’ve learned so much from teaching others. It has forced me to stay curious and updated on topics. I have pursued professional development as the personal development it actually is. I don’t mind not knowing “stuff,” and I value questions. If we could all be students forever, how much more informed we would all be about changing ideas and evolving perspectives!

Upholding Calmness Through Core Values

Living a calm life also involves embracing key values that guide our actions and interactions. Communication, Authenticity, Love, and Being Myself are the cornerstones of a calm lifestyle for me. By prioritizing open and honest communication, we reduce misunderstandings and foster healthier relationships. Authenticity allows us to live in alignment with our true selves, reducing internal conflict and stress. Love, in all its forms, nurtures compassion and kindness, while being true to ourselves brings a sense of fulfillment and peace.

Calmness is a personal journey, and it looks different for everyone. Whether through music, writing, or education, the path to calm living is paved with practices that nourish the soul and strengthen the body. By embracing these tools and values, we can create a life that is not only calm but deeply fulfilling.
